Government Higher Secondary School in Athanur in
Namakkal is one among the nine schools in the country selected for
implementing the Unesco funded Education for Sustainable Development
(ESD) Rice project in the school for the next six months.
The
project is being implemented in six countries across the globe,
including India, where rice is a common staple food. In India, the
project is being implemented in three schools each in Andhra Pradesh and
in Kerala and in two private schools in Dindigul and Tiruchi and one
government school in Namakkal.
Under the project,
students would get involved in all stages of production activity of rice
so as to get practical experience. Due to dynamic economic development,
concerns about natural environment and resources, it is essential that
students learn and understand the challenges and come out with a
solution for a sustainable community.
V. Chandrasekaran, coordinator for the project told
The Hindu
that the project brings together schools and communities to understand
the challenges, think of solutions and initiate steps. As many as 40
students from Class VI to X of the school were selected for the project
on the theme ‘Traditional and Cultural practices of Rice’.
They
would be observing rice cultivation activities in Kolli Hills and in
Vennandur areas. Students should observe all activities, from sowing
seed, planting, watering, applying fertilizer and cultivating and a
final report would be submitted to Unesco.
Selected students and coordinators will have a chance to attend the conference to be held in Japan, he added.
Under
the National Green Corps programme of the Ministry of Environment and
Forests, students of the school submitted five activities that outlined
solutions for environment protection in schools last year.
The
school was selected for ‘Best Activities’ among various schools in the
country and later by the Unesco. “More focus is to create awareness
among children about environment”, N. Mahesh Kumar, District
Environmental Coordinator, CEO office, Namakkal said. The inauguration
of the project was held on Friday in which Namakkal District Chief
